Why are there two types of compilers and interpreters?

The historical and practical necessity for both models is underscored by their complementary roles in software ecosystems and system design. Early computers, with severely limited memory and processing power, often relied on interpreters for their interactive capabilities and to conserve precious resources, while compilation became essential for producing the efficient system software that computers needed to function at all. This specialization persists. Systems programming, operating system kernels, and performance-critical applications like game engines are almost exclusively written in compiled languages such as C, C++, or Rust, where direct hardware control and maximal speed are non-negotiable. Conversely, interpreted languages like Python, JavaScript, and Ruby dominate domains where developer productivity, rapid prototyping, and cross-platform deployment are paramount, such as web development, data analysis, scripting, and automation. The interpreter itself, often written in a compiled language, provides a portable virtual machine or runtime environment that abstracts away hardware specifics.
The modern landscape is not a strict binary but a spectrum, with hybrid approaches like just-in-time (JIT) compilation blurring the lines to capture the benefits of both models. Languages like Java and C# are typically compiled into an intermediate bytecode, which is then interpreted or JIT-compiled into native code at runtime by a virtual machine, enabling platform independence and sophisticated, profile-guided optimizations that are impossible in a purely ahead-of-time compiled paradigm. JavaScript engines in modern browsers represent a pinnacle of this hybrid evolution, using intricate tiers of interpretation and adaptive JIT compilation to achieve near-native performance for dynamic code.
