What is NFT?

An NFT, or non-fungible token, is a unique digital certificate of ownership and authenticity recorded on a blockchain, most commonly Ethereum. Unlike fungible assets such as Bitcoin or traditional currency, where each unit is identical and interchangeable, each NFT is distinct and cannot be replaced on a one-to-one basis. The primary mechanism involves minting, where a digital file's metadata or a hash of the file is embedded into a new token issued on a blockchain. This token is then stored in a digital wallet, and its ownership can be transparently transferred via blockchain transactions. Critically, the value proposition hinges on decentralized verification: anyone can confirm the provenance and transaction history of an NFT without relying on a central authority, theoretically solving long-standing digital ownership problems. However, it is essential to distinguish that the token typically points to or represents the asset rather than containing it, leading to complexities if the linked file is stored on a centralized server that may later fail.
